Foreword by Katherine Brabon

An alienated daughter reconnects with her mother. A woman questions her reality as she struggles to recognise herself. An awkward car ride home from the airport leads to reconciliation. A family enjoys a lavish meal together.

From the moment we are brought into this world we are seeking connections, seeking love, seeking belonging. It is as fundamental to the human existence as breathing, and yet, is something we all struggle so despairingly with. We spend so long trying to fit in, that we neglect to see the connections twining us all together.

Nothing Rhymes with Orange is a moving anthology that offers contemporary meditations on the complexities of belonging. This diverse collection of short stories, personal essays and poems is sure to tug on your heart strings and challenge your understanding of what it means to belong.

Benefiting from recently catalogued archival materials, The Flip Side: Old China Hands and the American Popular Imagination, 1935–1985 evaluates the influence of an ensemble of well-known Americans born or bred in China – Pearl S. Buck, Henry R. Luce, Owen Lattimore and John Hersey – after their return to the United States of America.

The children of missionaries and others serving China, all contributed in significant ways to the globalisation of the American ideal in the 20th century, even as each sought in different roles – as publishers, as novelists, as scholars – to centre Chinese values and concerns in the anglophone public sphere. As Chinese ideas and values met the projection of American soft power and governmentality, a uniquely bilateral, global imaginary arose, wherein respect for China as an emerging force encountered Western reaction. For these “old China hands”, the return to the USA resulted in unique and differing sociocultural formations: Buck’s intersectional literary populism on behalf of “the Chinese people”; Henry R. Luce’s press internationalism; Lattimore’s “inner Asian” regional imaginaries; and Hersey’s China trilogy allegories. All were keen observers of and participants in international networks combining a diversity of China-based expertise and resources that continued to inform their everyday work at a great distance. Both public and private, these networks, onshore and off, enabled and energised their own advocacy that dared to imagine a Chinese future distinct from its colonial or semi-feudal past.

The Flip Side asserts that these American stakeholders occupied a transitional but crucial role in the rise of China in Western imagination, prior to China’s assertion of sovereignty over its own global role and message.

Foreword by Shankari Chandran

All lives have two things in common: they begin and they end.

But within each life, there are thousands of little openings and little closings, all happening at once. The day you make the decision to move abroad; the moment a relationship comes to a close; the choice that changes the course of life as you know it. Through many twists and turns, from one passion, one person, one experience to the next, we live not just once, not even twice, but as many times as we may wish. A collection of diverse and unique voices, the stories in Living Twice will take you on a journey through intriguing prologues and fulfilling epilogues. This anthology cradles the expressions of life itself: the rollercoaster that is growing up; experiences of loving and of being loved; and the hope we hold for new beginnings.

“From where does joy arise, and to where does it go?”– James Puterflam

The movie that you can rely on to brighten your spirits.

The hobby, place, or person that never fails to make a bad day feel that little bit better.

The desire to hold tightly to what we love, the things we believe in, is so uniquely human that it binds us all together.

When difficult days come rolling in, it is the nature of human beings to turn to the things that keep us afloat. Sometimes, they’re small, so dismissible that to put weight on them seems a fool’s errand: the smell of baking bread; the joy you feel when, finally, your home garden begins to sprout; the moments we don’t appreciate when life is going right, only when it’s going wrong.

But it is these simple pleasures that make us who we are.

In a world of chaos, complications and controversy, it is these thoughts that calm, cultivate and connect. These pages contain the scribbles of pleasure, a look into the simplest of joys, the wildest of passions, found in the moments in between.

“You need only turn around the corner to find it. Just where you left it.” – Vanessa Vu

Our world is built around the people, groups and communities we surround ourselves with. They form networks of connections, beliefs and ideas that can help to shape the people we become. These networks have become vital in a time where lockdowns have pushed us apart, and reinforced the need to be a part of something whole.

This anthology examines the ways we find joy in lockdown, keep people and places alive through memory, and search for connection in an increasingly digital age. Featuring poetry, short stories and visual art, it introduces bold new voices that will command your attention and prompt you to think differently about the relationships that make everyday life worthwhile.

Climate change is here, and how we react in the present will alter the course of the future; we can no longer deny that this is a key challenge for our times. Over the past two years, Australia has seen its worst bushfire season in recorded history, extreme floods and a global pandemic that brought about a renewed appreciation of nature.

The contributors to this anthology tell powerful stories of devastation and hope. From chilling predictions of the future, to tree conservation movements in India, to an exchange between Siri and Alexa on environmental sustainability, writers and artists from the լе University community have come together to give voice to experiences of climate change, nature and the environment.

It’s never been more important to keep the conversation alive.

For some of us, living in an uncertain world is a reality we accepted long ago; an unavoidable result of living in an unpredictable space sensitive to minute actions. We feel powerless. For others, the system holds infinite possibilities. We know how to play the game, to circumvent the rules, to get what we want. We feel powerful.

Power can be an intimate action.

What happens in our homes, our lives, our relationships—sometimes we’re at loss, in the hands of someone, something more powerful. But sometimes we’re in charge, we take control, we’re at ease with what we do and what we do to others.

The 2018 Student Anthology delves into what power means to us. In stories, essays, images and poems, լе University’s talented writers and artists explore the intimate pulls of personal relationships and the violent tugs of political forces, presenting diverse and intriguing portrayals of power.

Serialised in 1909–10, The Poison of Polygamy is a rare gem of Australian literature.

The first novel of the Chinese Australian experience, it is a roller-coaster tale of blackmail, murder, betrayal and even thylacine attack, partly based on real people, places and events. Revealing the human face of migration between imperial China and colonial Australia, it recounts the story of a man from southern China who tries his luck on the Victorian goldfields, the wife he leaves behind, and their eventual fraught reunion.

In this bilingual parallel edition, Australia’s and possibly the West’s earliest Chinese-language novel is presented in English translation for the first time. Illuminating introductions explore the work’s historical, cultural and linguistic context, and establish its unique significance in Australia’s literary and social history.

“A shiny little nugget has been disinterred from the tailings of our literary past … The Poison of Polygamy is an exciting addition to our literary history that deserves to be widely discussed and analysed in both China and Australia.” David Walker, Emeritus Professor, Deakin University and author of Anxious Nation

“The discovery of The Poison of Polygamy and its publication in this highly informative bilingual edition is a double happiness. It gives readers a highly entertaining new novel, replete with drama, emotion and intrigue. At the same time it documents Chinese Australian life in a key period of history.” Nicholas Jose, author of Avenue of Eternal Peace

Pip Smith's Too Close for Comfort, is the inaugural winner of the Helen Anne Bell Poetry Bequest, a biennial prize for a book of poetry by an Australian female poet which deals in some way with Australian culture. This award (and future awards) has been made possible by a generous bequest from the estate of Helen Anne Bell, a former student at the University of լе. The inaugural award in 2013 drew a highly competitive field of entries, but the judges, Joanne Burns, Jill Jones and myself, felt that Pip Smith's poems were the ones which engaged most robustly and imaginatively with Australian life, concerns, and culture in the 21st century.

From the Foreword by Judith Beveridge.

A world first! The first remixed and remixable anthology of literature.

This anthology of short stories is not some textual tome, frozen in time and space. It is alive, evolving organically in a constant state of flux. Why? Because each story is available under a Creative Commons licence, giving you rights to share and reuse the book as you see fit.

So how do you use a remixable anthology? Simple.

Step 1 - Read. Thumb your way through the pages at will. Find the stories you love, the ones you hate, the ones that could be better.

Step 2 - Re/create. Each story is yours to share and to remix. Use only one paragraph or character or just make subtle changes. Change the genre, alter its formal or stylistic characteristics, or revise its message. Use as little or as much as you like - as long as it works.

Step 3 - Share. Be part of a growing community of literature remixing. Post your remixes to the , and start sharing. The entire anthology can be remixed - the original stories, the remixes, and even the fonts.

Through the Clock's Workings is Read&Write!

"She loved to rule up red margins and write in black ink on white - deciphering texts and decoding maths problems."

Marginalia: writing in the margins, around the edges of pages. Students produce a lot of it. It's often critiques or interpretations of the main text; sometimes, it can even form a dialogue between readers as they comment on each other's comments. But here, we'd like to invite you to the main page, the centre stage, in this newest incarnation of the acclaimed լе University Student Writing Anthology.

"I have trapped my character within this page, within these margins, within these words, but you, dear reader, are bringing external forces into these words and margins."

And really, margins are just lines - lines on a page, lines we draw between ourselves and another person, or invisible lines on a map. Just lines, but we still find meaning in them. These lines on a page represent the thoughts, lives and imaginations of լе University students.

The marginalia is up to you.

This third incarnation of Phoenix is loosely themed on writing and is designed to bring our readers enjoyment, inspiration, and insight into others' creative processes. The University of լе Writers' Society is immensely proud of its annual anthology, but we are aware that publication is merely a single gear in the literary engine.

For the first time, extracts of early drafts and editorial reflections have been included to expose the private considerations of the artist and sometimes secretive editorial practices. Readers will also find a selection of short stories, poetry and non-fiction including interviews with prominent figures in Australian literature, such as Judith Beveridge and John Tranter.

However, the Writers' Society urges readers to remember that Phoenix is more than the sum of its parts. This journal is to us a kind of alchemy that preserves the promise of young writers, transforming the transient into the enduring. The theme of writing has made us very conscious of what motivates us to publish. Whether right or wrong in our belief, we compiled this anthology with the confidence that beauty is as profound as wisdom.
