Sheringtons is the history of a family over five centuries, set against contexts of place and enterprise. For the first three hundred years the Sherington family were yeomen farmers at Westleton on the coast of Suffolk. During the 19th century members of the family moved to South London. The family was re-shaped through urban living and separated through divorce and ultimately emigration overseas. Some went west to the Americas only to meet disappointment and violent deaths. Others went to Australia where they helped to found Ford Sherington, the manufacturer of the well-known Globite suitcase.

The history is a co-operation between two Sherington brothers. Geoffrey Sherington is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Õ¬Äе¼º½. Bruce Sherington initiated much of the genealogical research on which the study is founded.

Geoffrey Sherington is an Emeritus Professor in the History of Education and formerly Dean of the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Õ¬Äе¼º½. A co-author of the two volumed published history of the University, over the past three decades he has written numerous books on such topics as war and education, education policy, youth policy, and secondary schools, as well as Australian immigration and child migration.
